How to Quickly & Easily Edit Your Photos

By Christian | Filed under: Photography, Tools, Website Design

Sometimes all you want to do is quickly edit a photo or image with out any hassle or the need for expensive software.

Luckily there are many services on the web which can do this quickly, easily and for free.

My favourite is Picnik.

Picknik allows you to upload a photo, edit it and then download it back to your computer all within your browser and without having to register.

Things you can do with Picnik:

  • rotate photos
  • crop photos
  • resize photos
  • add special effects
  • add text over your images
  • sharpen photos
  • reduce red eye
  • make a colour photo black and white

My only slight gripe is that you sometimes get a pop-up asking you if you would like to upgrade to their Premium service. I’ve never felt the need to upgrade although they do offer some nice features.

I hope this comes in useful.

(Of course, Picnik can’t do everything!
For a lot of professional photo editing tasks I would recommend a more powerful bit of software like Photoshop.)

What software do you use to edit your pics?

Whilst as a wedding photographer I use Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop, the relatively high price tags for these pieces of software are an accepted part of essential business running costs. For other vendors dealing with the odd marketing photograph however you’ll get a great deal of mileage out of Google’s Picasa software http://picasaweb.google.com/home (the download link, at the time of posting this, is over on the right hand side of the linked page). Picasa is available for PC and Mac, it will catalogue all the images on your computer efficiently and clearly, auto-resize to Web friendly resolution for emailing and provide you with a host of useful editing functions. It’s not just good for a free package, it does as good a job as some software that you’d have to pay for (and in some instances better!)

    Hi Phillip,

    Great contribution, thanks!

I definitely agree. For a serious professional dealing with images, Photoshop is a must.

Picasa is a great alternative for basic editing and managing photos. Highly recommended.
