How To Get in The Top 100 Twitter List (or how to be a good Tweeter)

Top 100 Wedding Tweeters List

I’ve been receiving a lot of questions on how the Twitter Top 100 List works and which factors are taken into account to calculate the list.

Whilst I won’t divulge the exact algorithm, I will explain the thinking behind the list and what it’s meant to represent.

The reason for creating the Top 100 Tweeters was simple. I wanted to find out which UK wedding professionals were on Twitter and who the good Tweeters to follow were.

I started by following as many of the UK wedding Tweeters as I could find. Now, every time I find a new UK wedding pro on Twitter, I’ll follow them. I am currently following over 450 UK wedding professionals!

If I’m not yet following you, make sure you follow me (@ukWeddings) and I’ll add you to my follower list (if you’re UK based).

To create the Top 100 list I began to research and think about what really makes a valuable Tweeter….

So, here are some guiding principles on providing value to your followers and the UK wedding community on Twitter. You never know, following them might help you jump up the Twitter Top 100 List “wink” “wink”

There’s not a lot of point in setting up an account if you’re not going to Tweet.

Whilst we are all busy, there’s no excuse not to Tweet at least once every couple of days…particularly as Tweeting can be done on your smart phone, via SMS text message, on your home computer, through your Xbox 360 etc etc

Twitter is a social network, so start socialising and start networking. Networking with other industry professionals should be part of your core marketing strategy. Relationship building is key to any business.

Help Others

If someone you follow asks a question or needs help with something, help them!

You never know, they may return the favour in future but also, they will be more likely to follow you, communicate with you, retweet your tweets and spread your messages and content to others.

Share interesting and Useful Content

Sure, Twitter can and is used as a marketing channel. By all means, share your latest photoshoot or announce your latest blog post but don’t just promote yourself.

Try and give back to the community by sharing content you have found which you think is useful or provides some value to others.

Get Retweeted

By doing all the above, Tweeters will start retweeting you. This can have a massive viral effect as your Tweets begin to spread across the Twitterverse.

Grow Your Followers (Naturally)

There are many tools and schemes out there that allow you to suddenly get one million gazillion followers. HINT: as tempting as they may be, these tools offer you no value and you’ll look really spammy to others.

By helping, communicating, being polite, retweeting and offering value to other Tweeters, your follower numbers will increase naturally over time.

Summary

So there you go, the Top 100 list is simply a reflection on your value within the UK wedding Twitter community.

I know what you’re thinking. You were expecting this post to include exact details on how to get higher up the list. The reason I can’t tell you exactly is the same reason Google doesn’t tell you it’s secret sauce on how to get to the top of their listings. If everyone knew, everyone would do the same and the results wouldn’t be relevant.

My simple advice would be to follow the basic principles of being a valuable Tweeter. Make yourself a Tweeter who others need to follow for the fear of missing out on one of your brilliant Tweets. May the power of Twitter be with you!

My fingers and bleeding with sharing and connecting on twitter – I think I might have to take a leaf out of Staggered’s book and resort to shameful begging to get into your Top 100!

  45. Comment by Maggie — 16 November, 2010 @ 9:26 pm

have seen some people who are on your list – they are just tweeting about making alphabetti spaghetti for tea, not about weddings? Does that count.
If so, about to make some Horlicks!! (wink, wink)

  46. Comment by Christian — 17 November, 2010 @ 3:32 am

    Hi Maggie,

    Thanks for your question.

All Tweets are taken into account. The reason the list is about weddings is that the Tweeters that are included are wedding suppliers or connected to the wedding industry in some way e.g. brides to be.
What they tweet about is not necessarily taken into account, its more about the value of those tweets to other wedding tweeters.

If you do tweet about Horlicks, MrsPandP for example may find it interesting. This might then give you extra ‘points’ and put you higher up the list.

    Hope that helps.

    Christian

Obviously I am doing something wrong! for the life of me I don’t know what!
I have read your gudelines and that is how I have always worked on twitter, so I guess it’s just that others use it more than me, although my OH would question that!

  57. Comment by Christine, FuchsiaFlowerDesign — 7 January, 2011 @ 12:25 pm

I think you’re right Angela – I gave up trying to get on this list months ago, my twitter strategy works for me and allocating more time would be detrimental to my profit margins. . . . :-)

  58. Comment by Christian — 8 January, 2011 @ 8:48 am

@Angela Smith – Hi, thanks for your comment Angela. Could you send me your Twitter user name and I’ll take a look at your profile for you?

@Christine – If your strategy works for you and your business then please don’t change it. Whilst the list has it’s real benefits for those that are on it (e.g. more followers and recognition), it’s still only a bit of fun.

Thanks to you both for your comments and contributions! x

  59. Comment by Amanda, Bonne Fete — 17 January, 2011 @ 8:57 pm

Hi Christian – I didn’t even know this list existed until the weekend. Thanks to Mrs Boutique Baking I’m now up to speed. It’s fab, thank you. Any top tips to add since you wrote this article? Amanda

  60. Comment by Christian — 21 January, 2011 @ 5:06 pm

    Hi Amanda,

Thanks for the great comment, appreciate the positive feedback.

    With regards to new tips…

Well there are 2 things that have really changed since I started the list:

    1. – More and more UK wedding suppliers are joining Twitter all the time. I’m having trouble keeping up with them all there are so many! This means the competition for the list has got very intense and its harder to get in the list. You really need to stand out and become well known and tweet the best tweets consistently and on a regular basis.

    2. – Lots of tweeps are tweeting more and more. Sarah Marks of @hhjtinygems (currently number 1) Tweets a ridiculous average of 117 Tweets a day! Let me be clear that the list isn’t ranked solely on number of tweets (although it is a contributing factor). However tweeting more means she has a greater chance of helping other people, tweeting something useful, networking etc etc

With this in mind, and coming back to new tips, I would say trying to be more active on Twitter will help you move up places!

    Phew.

    Hope that helps! :-)

I don’t imagine for a minute that we would feature on your list as I normally only get the chance to tweet on Wednesdays and Fridays. I take it that doing WW’s and FF’s isn’t enough? All Facebook posts are now linked to Twitter too so more content pops up too.

I never understand this list, I am a highly effective twitter user, I’m a photographer so in the wedding industry, have a pretty good following and yet I’ve never once made the top 100, I must be missing something, perhaps it’s because I rarely mention the word weddings

Hi everyone that has left comments recently, sorry for the lack of replies. Thanks though, they all mean a lot.

Gary – Even though I was following you for some reason you weren’t in the database, I have now added you so you’ll be in contention from this Friday.

Mandy – We don’t count the number of times you use the word ‘weddings’ and it’s not just based on follower numbers I’m afraid. Perhaps you could integrate more within the wedding industry on Twitter. Tweeting more about weddings and also having more conversations with other wedding tweeters would probably help you move up the list. I hope that helps. :)
